Chen Hsong riding toward more growth with EV giant BYD | Plastics News

Oct 26, 2024

Hong Kong-based Chen Hsong Holdings Ltd. filled automaker BYD's order for 500 injection molding machines to equip 10 factories for electric vehicle production in just one year.

Now the world's largest EV maker is steering more business to the machine builder.

"We have a couple new orders. They are building a further number of new factories," said Chen Hsong's Stephen Chung, executive director and group chief officer of strategy, sales and marketing.

BYD has been investing in Chen Hsong's two-platen machines and its MK6 series.

The company exhibited an MK6 at Fakuma 2024 along with the all-electric Spark AE, which was launched in 2023 and promoted as having a wider application window compared with other all-electric presses.

"We always like to claim that we're more precise, we're faster, we're better and more consistent than our competition," Chung said. "But I think one thing in particular that stands out in the Spark is that we have a very wide application window.

"We can make a 25-millimeter, very thick wall all the way down to a 3-millimeter ultrathin part on the same machine," Chung said. "Try doing that with any other all-electric machine. You'll find that you can't. This is a unique technology that we have."

As for other brands, processors would likely need to buy two presses to mold such thin and thick parts, added Dave Fung, senior assistant to the chairman.

The Spark AE's appeal is growing, he added. "Another interesting application is toys," Fung said. "Some important customers are moving to electric machines only."

Rafael Ordonez, European sales and business development manager, also sees a "huge opportunity" for molding technical products.

Chen Hsong also has renamed its optional smart service as iChen Cloud following trademark issues with Mega Cloud.

The company says iChen Cloud helps processors optimize operations, improve productivity and stay ahead in an era of intelligent manufacturing.

"Now it's iChen and people will remember the name," Chung said. "It's a full system monitoring the two machines at Fakuma and some machines overseas."

With the IoT as its foundation, iChen Cloud integrates advanced modules and the data platform to provide manufacturers tools to accelerate the adoption of smart factories and drive digital transformation, the company said.
